Originally a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor who enjoyed running, I found that attending regular Pilates classes myself helped to create real balance in my life. Then, when I evolved my career and became a Sports Massage Therapist working alongside Physios and Neurophysios I began to see how Pilates could be an excellent tool not only in helping people rehabilitate after injury but also how valuable it was as a means of preventing further issues and ensuring better overall quality of life.
So, in June 2009, I qualified as a Body Control Pilates Teacher and my beliefs grew into a passion! I have been teaching matwork classes with that passion ever since and opened my own Studio in Alresford 5 years ago. I am continuing to further my professional development alongside teaching and have gained ante/post natal Pilates and Bone Health qualifications and in 2011 became a Level 4 Low Back Pain Specialist Instructor on the Register of Exercise Professionals. I am also currently a Supervising Teacher for the Body Control Pilates teacher training programme.
I have been practising Pilates since 1997, focusing on the Body Control Pilates method since 2003. Having experienced lower back pain, I appreciate the importance of spinal mobilisation – my decision to train as a Pilates teacher came from this understanding and my desire to share the benefits and my love, of Pilates with others. I started my teacher training at the prestigious Body Control Pilates (R) Centre in London in 2010, and now hold a Level 3 Pilates Teacher status with the Register of Exercise Professionals. I am currently studying for the Level 4 Low Back Pain Specialist Qualification, and a new Level 4 Certificate in Instructing Applied Pilates Mat Work, which includes focus on special populations such as Pre- and Post-natal groups, older people and those with Osteoporosis.
I regularly utilise small equipment in my classes – foam rollers, magic circles, resistance bands, big and small balls – as I love the additional challenges and feedback they offer. Expanding on my love of “Pilates toys” I recently attended the Body Control Pilates “Teaching on the Reformer” course, further deepening my understanding of the Pilates method.
I qualified as a Level 3 Body Control Pilates Matwork teacher in 2014. Some years earlier I had joined one of Sally’s Pilates classes on the advice of my Physio after a series of running & climbing injuries. It was immediately clear to me that Pilates was supporting the exercises the Physio had given to me, and that my body was growing stronger and more balanced. I had been working as a Senior School English Teacher but the stresses of the job were beginning to take their toll, so I resigned and re-trained as a Pilates teacher.
As well as teaching English, I have also been an Outdoor Education Instructor, and a keen sportsperson and know that Pilates can help with the demands that sport makes on a body. I followed up my initial qualification with further studies in how Pilates can benefit runners, and other sportspeople. However, I firmly believe that Pilates can benefit everyone: men & women of all ages, shapes and conditions, through its emphasis on strengthening and aligning the body. I have seen its impact, on not only my own body, but on the mind as well, and it was this that led me to change both my career, and my life.
